The proxy had been disabled and my IP was visible?
« on: March 25, 2010, 11:20:32 PM »
I was using an anonymous proxy the other day and while checking my IP address I found the proxy had been disabled and my IP was visible.  I use Firefox with FoxyProxy Basic.  So here's the question: what the heck happened to my proxy?  Foxy showed the proxy address but the IP address was mine.

Any ideas about how and why this happened and how to prevent it from happening again?

Thank in advance!

I've been trying to duplicate this all day and it got me thinking: "Is it possible that the proxy addy just went to transparent?"  I don't know how they work from the hosting aspect (on my to-do-list) but is it a probability?

yep, that could be, and it happens from time to time ;)

also FoxyProxy extension might need to be updated, Firefox cookies cleaned etc

There are 3 types of proxy:
Quote
* High Anonymous Proxy (Level 1): The web server can't detect whether you are using a proxy by the information your browser sent.
* Anonymous Proxy (Level 2): The web server knows that you are probably using a proxy, but it can't detect your real IP.
* Transparent Proxy (Level 3): The web server knows that you are using a proxy and it can also detect your real IP address.

Please use Level 1 or 2 proxy if you don't want to reveal your real IP. Thanks.

I was using a level 2 proxy at the time but who knows why it went transparent.  Luckily I'm not up to too much but my ISP's blacklisted some of my favorite sites.

use socks & socksify you browser or other web software you need with SocksCap (or freecap) then even DNS requests (can be tuned) will be through socks ;)

or even better use your own VPN with traffic data encryption :)

1) Please check the settings of your browser whether it's using the proxy.
2) Please check the proxy again whether it's still Level 2. (The proxy admin may change the setting.)
