I use Vidalia on firefox sometimes when I feel I want to do things on the net that I want anonymous. I also have Privoxy on my computer that runs when I activate Vidalia.
I'm sure many on here are familiar with the two programs. Anyways, how anonymous is that for me. I don't ever really use passwords or stuff over Tor (what vidalia uses), if I can help it.
Would Vidalia and Privoxy prevent my college or any other people from seeing what I am doing over the net? How anonymous does it make me? And who are the people that can see me?
I have to log onto the net when I use the internet, even on my computer, to use the college server. However, I check my IP address occasionally, and notice that its in Sweden or something, so its never linked to this computer while I have the stuff running.
Anyways, thanks for any information.

Your ISP (in this case College or grade school whichever is the case) would be able to see your connection to an anonymous source. However, following that connection they shouldn't be able to see where you go or what you do especially if that source is encrypted. Your concern at that point IS, your connected source would in most cases be able to see where you go and what you are up to.
No one is ever 100% anonymous, someone (if they are interested) can always see what you're doing to some degree. Question IS, why would they be interested in you? However, if what you intend on doing is illegal or slanderous, and you are concerned about it, then you probably shouldn't do it.
Just remember, law enforcement is a business like any other. Businesses must make decisions that justify the means (expenditure of funds). If law enforcement can't, they won't unless you are dealing in child pornography. Then it doesn't matter how much it costs to take you down, it'll get done.

No, it has nothing to do with that. It's more just a privacy thing than anything. Do you know exactly what Privoxy and Vidalia do to make it so not even your ISP can see what you are doing?

I'm not buying that it's just a privacy thing Johnny, but it isn't important to me one way or the other.

what is the point of having a proxy website if people asking about proxys are going to get these answers. Is this website sponsored by the local sheriffs department or what? Good way to make people leave a forum and scare them off is to make them feel like criminals when they ask questions. Here is a perfect example of why someone might need a proxy and its not for illegal reasons...you join a site like ya*oo and start answering questions for people, some people, for absolutely no reason but to laugh at you I guess, will report your answer to the "security" for that website, the "security" is not even there and its an automated response that automatically deletes your question or suspends you for doing nothing wrong. This is a perfect situation where a proxy is useful.

If im going to spend 5 minutes to answer someones question, I expect to have the right to drop my link in the question since the link for my website is relevant. yes its a way to build up traffic for me and benefits me, but I was chosen as best answer many times so the link is going to my website with free stuff that helps people. Its crap that I help build up someone elses website like ya*oos everyday just to have them come back with automated response saying they wont help me build mine up this way. You drop any link on that site and the vultures report you to the automated security response. Besides, porn isnt illegal in usa but many people are embarrassed, thats another reason this guy might want a proxy for his college.
