FPL Calls Home?

I've heard that FPL calls home with the proxies it leeches.  If true, why is that necessary?  A a similar act by the author of AD (AccessDiver) basically killed its popularity?

It's on the main menu of FPL trial version.

However the registered version won't send any proxies home.
